King and his handler — 20-year Sheriff’s Office veteran and SWAT team leader Sgt. Terry Crews — were in the stadium to acclimate the dog, which was to be used for bomb sweeps, crowd control, and other duties at the venue. The dog was seated next to his handler, when he suddenly jumped up and over the wall. King landed awkwardly on his front shoulder and face and clearly was seriously injured.

The emergency veterinarian who treated the dog determined that his back was broken and his chance of recovery poor, so the K- 9 was euthanized.
